THE STARR HILL STORY

BORN IN A MUSIC HALL
In the early 1990s, Charlottesville native, Mark Thompson took his biology degree from James Madison University and moved to Portland, Oregon, ground zero for craft beer’s growth in America. The natural blend of art and science poured into the brewing scene inspired him to take up the craft. Working alongside brewers in Oregon and Colorado, Mark honed his own artisan beer recipes.

An old friend looking to start a brewpub and music hall back in Charlottesville eventually lured Mark back to Virginia. In September 1999, they partnered to found Starr Hill Brewery out of a passion for great beer and live music. Named after the local neighborhood, the brewery shared its original space with the Starr Hill Music Hall. The historic storefront on Main Street was once home to the state of Virginia’s first craft brewing operation, Blue Ridge Brewing Company.

BREWED IN VIRGINIA
As the second oldest craft brewery in Virginia, Starr Hill has led the way as a pioneer in the industry, helping to lay the groundwork for the growing craft beer community in the region. Starting out with only a handful of regular employees, kegs of Starr Hill were delivered and sold by hand out of a van, including the milestone first account where C&O Restaurant tapped Amber Ale. We have been pouring our beers and sharing the love at live music festivals since the first Bonnaroo and FloydFest in 2002.

Starr Hill beers began to receive attention beyond Virginia, including some big awards at the Great American Beer Festival, World Beer Cup and Great British Beer Festival. In response to the growing demand, Starr Hill moved in the summer of 2005 from our small downtown storefront to a larger facility, once home to a ConAgra Foods plant, located several miles west in the town of Crozet. It was here where Starr Hill became the first production craft brewery in Virginia, focused on bottling and packaging beer to ship to around Virginia and beyond. The brewery and Tap Room are still based there today, nestled in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Starr Hill Brewery still remains one of the largest independent and locally owned breweries in Virginia, proud of our accomplishments while striving to make creative and world-class beer every day. In 2017, we opened our first satellite location, the Pilot Brewery & Side Stage in Roanoke. As the company’s first R&D facility, exploratory brewing styles highlight the diverse menu at the bar and the venue focuses on showcasing new music in the area. Our next outpost opened in 2019 in the Scott’s Addition neighborhood of Richmond, VA. The Starr Hill Beer Hall & Rooftop provides yet another unique brewing facility and a vast craft beer playground for customers including a beautiful rooftop to look out over the city. In 2020, we are planning the opening of our next two locations on Main Street in Lynchburg, VA and a return to our home neighborhood in the new Dairy Market in Charlottesville, VA. The taproom and beer garden are open seven days a week in warmer months and six days a week in colder months. They offer tasting flights as well as full pours of all our beers, some of which are taproom exclusives. They also offer growler sales and are happy to fill personal growlers.

Food:  They offer a selection of small plates and snacks, and host a rotating lineup of food trucks. Guests are also welcomed to bring in or order food from local eateries.

Virginia’s first urban cidery. They have friendly and knowledgeable staff that is happy to guide you through a tasting or flight and make recommendations for glass and bottle selections. You can enjoy your selections in cozy indoor cider salon or on our outdoor patio. Ample parking is available in our courtyard and along the street.

Winery-style tasting: $10.00 for 9 ciders (1 oz. pour each), with add-ons available.

Flights: $15.00 for 5 ciders (3 oz. pour each), with option to add a 3 oz. pour of additional ciders for $3.00 each

Tours: We offer daily behind-the-scenes tours and tastings.

Reservations for up to 20 people in the taproom may be arranged by filling out the form on website.  Reservations are considered on a “first come, first served” basis and are available during normal business hours.  We will hold the tables for 15 minutes after the agreed upon reservation time or the tables will be released.  There will be a $50.00 booking fee, due at least 2 weeks prior to your reservation date.  This booking fee of $50.00 secures your spot and will be refunded at the end of your party.  You may cancel the reservation, and receive a full refund of your booking fee if canceled 7 days prior to the event date.   If you cancel after this time-frame, or are a no-show, you will forfeit the booking fee.

They offer private party reservations for up to 90 people in the taproom.  This means the taproom and brewery will be closed to the public.   These are available ANY day of the week!

Please note the following:

Private party rates will require a purchase minimum of $200.00 per hour.

This fee covers staffing, clearing and additional coordination required for your event, along with all clean-up.

It does NOT include gratuities for the bartenders.

A booking fee of $100.00 is required ONE MONTH in advance of the date you wish to reserve. This booking fee secures your spot on the Private Party Schedule and will be refunded to you at the end of your private event.  You may cancel the reservation, and receive a full refund of your booking fee if canceled 14 days prior to the event date.   If you cancel after this time-frame, or are a no-show, you will forfeit the booking fee.

In the tasting room, you can try a flight, or grab a growler of Isley Brew to go or just enjoy a pint with friends. They have a relaxed atmosphere with board games, live music, TVs and more to enjoy.  The urban patio, located off the brew house, is a great place to see the fireworks at The Diamond or just enjoy the fresh air.

Neil Burton, the founder of Strangeways Brewing, has always had a penchant for exploring the unknown, especially when it comes to beer. As a result, he has found himself in some of the more peculiar corners of the world tasting as many unique beers as possible. What he discovered on his journeys is not of great importance. But what he returned with is—a profound passion for, and acute knowledge of, implausibly good beer.

Combining this fixation on great beer with his penchant for the unfamiliar, Neil imbedded himself in Virginia’s burgeoning craft brew culture. Realizing he didn’t want to merely be a spectator of the craft beer business, he began tirelessly working towards the goal of what would eventually become Strangeways Brewing.

Hyperborea was a place beyond the north winds in Greek mythology where the sun was always shining and outdoor activities could be enjoyed every hour of the day. Brewery Tours: Our staff is informed, passionate and loves to educate on Garden Grove’s philosophy and the ever-changing craft beer culture. It’s an intimate setting, and tours are given on request- if they’re not too busy- just about any time.

Dining: They serve a selection of fine meats, cheeses, smoked salmon and crackers.  (Menu) Also welcome take out, delivery, and home cooking. Garden Grove is surrounded by some of Richmond’s best restaurants that offer convenient options when you are in the mood for some great food with one of our great beers.

Dog Friendly: Garden Grove is a dog friendly brewery.

Stone Brewing’s brand-new Richmond brewery is now open for public brewery tours. As your expert guide (aka Indoctrination Specialist) takes you through the heart of our brewing facility in Richmond, you’ll learn all about the brewing process & craft beer culture. Tours last approximately 45 minutes and are followed by a guided tasting of our phenomenal beers.

Public Tour Schedule: First come, first served, 25 passes available per tour

• Monday-Thursday: 5PM & Friday-Sunday: 1, 3 & 5PM
• Tours are $3 for all guests. This includes a taster glass that you get to keep and        $1 goes to local charities.
• Passes will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. Youths and adults not wishing to drink are welcome.
• Tour passes are available at the Stone Company Store – Richmond during normal hours. Passes will only be disbursed for same-day tours. To ensure quality and safety, public tours are strictly limited to 25 people. Weekends and holidays are extremely busy, so plan to arrive early to secure your spot! Tim and Jason first crossed paths 20 years ago working at a Richmond area environmental engineering consulting company. Throughout the years they’ve stayed in touch both professionally and personally. In late 2016, while contemplating a career change, Jason decided to pursue his love of craft beer and set his sights on opening a brewery in his new home County of Powhatan. Knowing Tim also appreciates good craft beer and had previously lived in Powhatan, a business partnership was born! We started Dancing Kilt Brewery as a way to bring locally brewed craft beer to Chester. Traveling Europe skiing the Alps, every town had their own local brewery.  I guess we got restless waiting for someone else to bring a brewery to Chester.  Our passion for the culinary arts has found brewing beer to be a natural extension.
